Colwall Cricket Club is proud to be a national leader in women’s cricket, with women and girls making up 37% of our membership and a proud history dating back to 1926.

Our women’s and girls’ section continues to grow year after year, with opportunities for players of all ages, abilities and experience levels. Whether learning the game, returning to cricket, or picking up a bat for the first time, Colwall offers a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment.

The Colwall Legs XI is our women’s softball team, competing in the Worcestershire League. The team provides a fun and social introduction to cricket, while also giving players the chance to develop their skills and confidence in a team setting.

Our softball programme is also an important stepping stone for players who want to progress into hardball cricket.

By creating a fun, inclusive and confidence-building environment, players are able to develop the core skills of the game at their own pace before taking the next step. Through coaching, match experience and supportive team sessions, we help women and girls build the technique, understanding and self-belief needed to move from softball into hardball cricket when they feel ready.

This progression is central to our long-term vision. We want every player to have a clear pathway at Colwall, whether they wish to enjoy social softball cricket, challenge themselves in league competition, or develop towards hardball cricket and beyond.

We already have an U15 girls’ hardball team, giving younger players the opportunity to continue their development in a supportive and competitive environment. New for 2026, we are also proud to be part of a combined women’s hardball team with local clubs Hanley and Bushley, creating even more opportunities for women to progress and play the game.

By supporting this journey, we are not only growing participation but strengthening the future of women’s cricket at Colwall.

Our Women & Girls teams are coached by Hannah Skipworth, who plays for University of Worcester Ladies and Hagley CC Ladies. Hannah brings a wealth of cricketing experience to Colwall and also coaches on the Herefordshire Cricket County Pathway for U11, U13 and U15 girls.

Training takes place on Thursday evenings, with U15 girls’ and women’s sessions held at Colwall Cricket Club from 6:30pm. We also run U18 training for girls and boys on Friday evenings, a hugely popular club night that regularly welcomes more than 200 young players and their families.

All sessions are supported by our dedicated volunteer coaches, who are ECB-trained and DBS-checked through the club’s Safeguarding team.

Pre-season preparations begin with Winter Nets at The Downs School, Colwall. During the 2026 programme, we hosted a Women & Girls Coaching Masterclass, offering a high-quality coaching session designed to build skills, confidence and enjoyment of the game.

This masterclass was made possible thanks to funding awarded by Herefordshire Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. This support is helping us accelerate our plans to grow women’s and girls’ cricket at Colwall Cricket Club.

In 2026, Colwall Cricket Club will celebrate its centenary — 100 years since Colwall became the birthplace of organised women’s cricket.

To mark this landmark moment, our Women & Girls programme will conclude with our Centenary Women’s Softball Festival on 9 August. The festival will be a celebration of our history, our players, our community and the exciting future of women’s cricket at Colwall.

But this is more than a celebration. It is our manifesto for the future.

We are committed to growing the girls’ and women’s game at Colwall by creating more opportunities, stronger pathways and a truly welcoming environment where every player can belong, develop and thrive. From young girls picking up a bat for the first time, to women returning to cricket or discovering the game later in life, Colwall Cricket Club is determined to make cricket accessible, enjoyable and inspiring for all.

Our centenary is not just about looking back with pride. It is about moving forward with purpose — building on our legacy, championing female participation and helping shape the next 100 years of women’s cricket.
