In slightly cooler conditions of late with a brisk wind blowing, Colwall U13s headed into Wales to play the final knockout round of the regional section of the ECB cup. Visiting Penarth CC who have the largest Dynamos and All Stars set up in the Country, a warm welcome was immediately provided by our hosts, underlining a feeling that this was likely to be two clubs with shared values in growing the game for young cricketers.
Captain Elliot won the toss and elected to field and against a talented opposition Colwall managed to keep some control on the total being built by Penarth thanks to an ability to keep picking up wickets against batters who looked set. Charlie Young opened up into a stiff breeze and bowled an excellent spell, admirable line and length getting rewarded. In the middle overs, Will Barter and Campbell Hall slowed the run rate and picked up wickets showing guile and great temperament before a critical late spell from Theo Sparrey wrestled control back as Penarth looked to hit out. As has been the case all season, the fielding was first class with a top notch run out. Captain Elliot managed his squad of bowling options very well and as is surely highly unusual at this stage of a national tournament, all 10 outfielders bowled demonstrating the depth of all round talent that this group has.
A total of 143 looked perhaps 20 more than ideal and would require diligent, smart batting to get close.
From the outset, Campbell Hall and Alex Bolderson batted with a level of composure, skill and talent that settled any nerves, moving nicely to 50 without loss. Campbell was caught at mid on as he attempted to turn the screw further, but his valuable contribution was then matched and eclipsed by Theo Sparrey who in scoring 29 played his best innings so far for the club. Alex was rewarded with a retirement 30 not out bringing the captain to the crease who, as has been the case all season, calmly moved Colwall towards victory. Theo was replaced by Kit 'the hit' Huckle who promptly knocked off the winning runs.
As had been the case in the county final, this was a close game played in a great spirit against talented opposition. Thanks again to Penarth who kindly put on a good tea for us afterwards before the victors headed off to Barry Island for an hour taking on the waves.
