CCC Evening League XI winners of the Thompson Cup 2025

Congratulations to all

Tuesday saw Colwall’s Evening League side travel to Martley CC for the final of the Thompson Cup. A strong side of regular “evening leaguers” made the journey with a good mix of first and second team players, and the resounding victory is shared with all 31 players who took to the field in over the past few months to compete in the cup competition. The competition has seen a number of close matches against good quality opposition, but the final ultimately fell short of being a thriller; Colwall were put into bat by Martley’s captain and moved to 29 runs from 26 balls before Sam Williams (10) was caught off the bowling of Jones. The mainstay of the innings was Jack Collins who hit an impressive 50 (ret. n/o) from just 19 balls. Jackson Heath’s 26 from 19 balls and Chris Kendall’s 32 from 17 were the other significant contributions in an innings total of 156 from 100 balls, giving the home side a tough chase for the win. However, when Martley’s opener Dunks used Collins’ extra pace to smite 14 from the first three balls, an unlikely victory seemed possible; and with 24 runs from the first 10 balls Martley could be forgiven for thinking it might be their day. A wicket for Sam Bradley in the final ball of his first set followed by two wickets from Charlie Cresswell saw Colwall fight back and Martley slipped from 24 for no loss from 9 balls to 25 for 3 from 16 balls. Wickets then fell regularly as Colwall used frequent bowling changes to prevent any batsman from settling and Colwall sealed the win in the 84th ball when Sam Williams clean bowled Martley’s number 11 Pete Gardner. The spinners proved decisive with Cresswell’s 3 for 11 off 20 balls, Rahul’s 3 for 12 off 20 balls were huge factors in the win, with Sam Williams offering a nice cameo with 1 for 1 from 4 balls and Sam Bradley and Savvy each taking one wicket. In all a fantastic way to end the competition with some silverware with a number of Colwall spectators present in the evening sunshine to see Jack, Sam and the team lift the trophy. Well done all.
